Causes and Signs of Mold In Your Home

11/9/2018 (Permalink)

While some mold is visible, most is hidden. Mold can creep out of unexpected places where moisture has built up or where water damage has been.

You may not realize it, but mold could be growing and / or hiding within your home. Knowing what to look for and what can cause mold is very important.

The biggest cause of mold is water damage that’s gone unnoticed, has been left unattended to or has not been cleaned up properly. Being that mold thrives in environments where moisture is present, areas where there’s been water damage are ideal for mold to grow and thrive. Mold can begin to form and show itself within less than 24 hours!

Indoor mold can lead to health problems. Obviously if you see mold, you have mold in your home. Don’t forget though that not all mold is visible as often it is growing or has grown hidden inside your walls or beneath your floor boards. Be aware that even if there is visible mold that may not be the only affected area in your home.

1. Humidity When a home has humid conditions, it means moisture in the air is higher. High humidity can cause condensation and excess water, providing an ample environment and food source for mold spores.

2. Condensation A lot of condensation means that there is a lot of moisture and potentially a mold problem. Mold can grow anywhere where there is condensation build up.

3. Rust Condensation can cause rusting to occur in your home. If you notice rust on pipes you may have a higher moisture level and therefore most likely also a mold problem.

3. Leaks If you have a leak in your home, it can eventually lead to water damage. In addition, it causes those prime, moist conditions mold requires to grow.

4. Warping Materials such as drywall and wood can warp if moisture is present. Warped walls or floors may mean a mold problem is present.

5. Deterioration Moisture issues can lead to paint chipping, wallpaper peeling, and other materials deteriorating. Keep an eye out for deterioration happening in your home.

6. Strange odor Mold tends to often have a musty, moldy odor. If you smell a musty odor in your home, then it’s likely you have mold hiding someplace. The worse the smell the higher the possibility of mold growing in that location.

If you suspect or believe that your house has mold, contact a qualified professional in order to assist. They can asses the situation, locate and determine a mold problem and safely and properly remove it. Attempting to remove the mold without the help of a professional may aggravate the situation as some mold spores may be accidentally missed or caused to be spread about your home further. Give SERVPRO of Greensboro North, Kernersville a call in order to have your mold removed safely and properly. 336-379-1772
